Weekly Review

The first team travelled to play Bradley 2nd XI hoping to keep there promotion push on course. After winning the toss for a once, we asked Bradley to bat first. It looked like a bad decision as the Bradley openers raced to 40 without loss, but once Joe Alvey made the breakthrough, wickets began to fall regular, and Bradley were eventually bowled out for 100.  Tinashe and Joe Bottomley took 4 wickets each, while Joe Alvey and Owen got 1 wicket each. Anthony Cox fielded superb and caught two stunning catches. Our reply got off to a bad start as we were reduced to 18-3 with Joe Bottomley, Callum and Chris all back in the hut. This brought Tinashe (37no)and Les (30no) to the crease and they managed to steady the ship and put on a 80 run partnership to get us to our target.

Meanwhile the second team were entertaining high flying Bingley Congs 2nd XI. Congs batted first and racked up an impressive 224-3. In reply we got off to a good start with openers Sam Chipman (63) and Noel Chipman (47) setting about the Congs attack before both were dismissed. Phil Aldred (36) and Aidan Kirby (22) helped push the score along but unfortunately we couldn't manage to keep up with the run rate and closed our innings on 201-5.

TinasheTinashe Hits a 1000!

Young Haworth West End star Tinashe Gomwe has reached a superb milestone by scoring over 1000 runs in all competitions so far this summer. Tinashe has scored 673 runs in the 1st team and 454 runs in the u17s to give him a total of 1127 runs, and with still a month of the season left Tinashe can add to that.. Tinashe has also been in good form with the  Craven Area u17 Joe Lumb team. Starring in victories over Nidderdale and the Aire Wharfe leagues.

Cup Finalists

The u17's have reached this years William Spencer cup final. The game is to be played against Bolton Abbey at Oakworth CC on Sunday 20th July with a 2:00pm start. Our lads overcame Silsden in the semi final. After being put into bat we made 99-8 off our 20 overs. Openers Danny Riley and Tinashe Gomwe put on over 50 for the first wicket and a late partnership between Joe Alvey and Callum Jones made sure we had a decent total to bowl at on a slow wicket. Our bowlers soon had the Silsden batsmen behind the run rate and wickets started to tumble, as Silsden struggled against some accurate bowling. Tinashe took 5 wickets and Joe Bottomley, Joe Holt and Corey Benfield all chipped in with vital wickets as the Silsden innings closed on 84 all out.

Junior News

The club this season have 7 juniors representing UAJCL Lords Taverners teams. Which is great news for the boys and Haworth West End CC.  Charlie Shimmin has been selected for the u11's while Jack Middleton, Josh Holt, and Liam Chipman have all been selected for the u13 team. In the u15 section Callum Jones and Joe Holt have recieved a call up, Joe Bottomley would have been called up but he is unfortunately on holiday when the games take place. Tinashe Gomwe is also making his mark in the u17 Joe Lumb team top scoring in there first game with 32no against the Huddersfield league.

Subs and Shirts

All subs and money for new shirts needs paying by the end of the month. It was discussed at the last committee meeting that failure to do so would result in players being unavailable for selection in any of our teams until paid. Senior subs are £12 while junior subs are £6 while adult shirts with the Orient sponsor are £15 and for players under the age of 18 the orient shirts are £5. The Cannon Mills shirts are £2.50 please try and make an effort to pay as soon as possible as the club relies on such money to stay a float.

Season Preview

This season is set to be the clubs most promising season for quite some time. The club has done much needed work to re-furbish the pavilion which now is looking one of the best in the league. Outside the pitch is looking superb and while other teams are struggling to get their field ready for the start of the season. Ours will be at its best come the first game. All the teams have new shirts supplied by D&R Sports and kindly sponsored by The Orient Restaurant, G. L. Aldred Joiner and Contractor and Cannon Mills Shopping Village. The first team will be led by Les Jones and will consist of other experienced players like Chris Alvey and Andy Holt. While also boasting some of the best junior talent around. Graham Aldred is this seasons second team skipper and has plenty of experience to call upon in Glen Palmer, Andy Parker and new signing Tony Dimunantes. It should be another exciting season for the seconds with another crop of promising young players coming through to bolster the ranks. A big thank you must go to Graham & Janette, Les & Jill, Jack, Dennis and George for his help with coaching the youngsters over the winter, and everybody who turned up for the Natwest Clean Up day. Also thank you to all our sponsors for the 2008 season.

The u13's was the only team to be drawn at home and face Wharfedale "B". The u15's make their defence of the Raleigh-Hargreaves cup with a tough away tie against Settle. Haworth West End is yet again taking part in the Natwest Cricket Force clean up weekend on 5th and 6th of April. This year we are hoping we can get enough people up to help start building our proposed new scorebox. There will also be plenty of other things to do inside the pavilion as well as out. If all players and families make an effort to support the weekend it will make a massive difference to our clubs facilities which would be a benefit to everyone. There will be food and drinks available throughout the day, as well as a free 2008 Cricket Force T-shirt for all helpers.

Sad Loss

Alan Mcall aged 78 has unfortunately passed away. Alan had been a very loyal servant of our cricket club for over 40 years. Alan served as club secretary for many years before later becoming club chairman and groundsman. Alan worked tirelessly for no reward for our cricket club and in many ways made sure that the club kept running. Unfortunately Alan suffered from ill health and had to retire two years ago. The club will not forget all the hard work Alan has put in over the years, and is set to rename the newly refurbished pavilion in his memory. The clubs thoughts go out to Alan’s widow Molly who spent many a hour at the ground helping Alan.

Indoor Competition

On Sunday Danny Riley, James Sutcliffe, Tinashe Gomwe, Callum Jones, Joe Bottomley and Josh Crowther from Oxenhope CC took part in a six-a-side u16 competition at the Headingley indoor centre. The lads competed against Pudsey (Leeds) and South Shields CC from Tyne & Wear. In the first game we came up against South Shields. Danny Riley won the toss and elected to field where we managed to bowl them all out for 125, a very competitive score. Danny Riley and Joe Bottomley were the pick of our bowlers. In our reply we lost Tinashe and Joe Bottomley early before James Sutcliffe (37) and Callum Jones (20) managed to get our total to a creditable 90 all out against a South Shields team with much more six-a-side experience than ourselves. The second game against Pudsey was always going to be tough with Pudsey fielding 3 Yorkshire u16 players. This time Pudsey won the toss and elected to bat. Our bowlers yet again found it hard work restricting Pudsey to 145 from their alloted overs. Danny Riley was once again the pick of the bowlers picking up a very well taken caught and bowled. In our reply Callum Jones top scored with a well made 23 unfortunately we were bowled out for 84. Everybody enjoyed the experience and a good afternoon was had by all.

Strange Happenings?

It seems that somebody has re-opened are old web-url and is copying what you read here on the official site. It has been put together very professionally in most cases. The imitation site has even gone to the trouble of showing some fake Bradford & Bingley indoor nets which have infact been taken off Google images. Whoever is doing this is most welcome to keep this up as 2 sites is better than 1. Especially as the editor seems to have so much time on their hands, aswell as a fascination with all things at Haworth West End CC.

   2007 Presentation Night

Branshaw Golf Club hosted this years club presentation awards. A great night was had by all who attended. Will Kitchen from Yorkshire CCC came along to present the awards. There was mixed fortune amongst the clubs teams this season. The first team unfortunately got relegated to division 4 while the second team gained promotion by winning division 5. In the juniors the u15’s won both the league division 2 and the cup, while the u13’s were relegated back to division 2 although this was very unfortunate as we played 14 games winning 5 of them, while our local rivals Oxenhope only won 4 games but managed to stay up by claiming 1 point each for the 4 games they had postponed. This enabled them to stay up by the slim margin of 1 point. Graham Aldred’s u12’s had a superb season by reaching the quarter finals of the Gordon Bowers competition. It was the first time the u12’s had ever got out of the group stages. The new u11 team found things a little tougher winning 1 game all season although the team fought hard in every match and many stars are in the making. George Stubley won the first team’s batting averages and also finished second in the division 3 league averages as well as collecting the first team player of the year award while Andy Benfield won the bowling averages. Youngsters Danny Riley and Sam Chipman shared the first team fielding award. In the second team Chris Alvey claimed the batting prize while Tinashe Gomwe the club’s Zimbabwean star won the bowling averages. To go along with the second team player of the year award. Youngster Joe Alvey took the fielding award. Tinashe Gomwe (pictured below right) also received the Harold Blackburn Trophy at the Craven league dinner for the most outstanding player under the age of eighteen.  He was also presented with a framed scorecard of his superb bowling achievement of all 10 wickets in an innings by Glusburn CC secretary Richard Smith. In the u15’s Tinashe Gomwe won the batting, Joe Bottomley the bowling and James Sutcliffe the fielding awards. Callum Jones won the league prize for wicket keeping while setting a new u15 league record with 13 victims. The u13 prize winners were Liam Chipman batting Carlton Beanland bowling and Owen Palmer fielding. Liam Chipman, (pictured below left) with his award also won the u13 league cricketer of the year; this was an unbelievable achievement as Liam was only 11 years old. Samee Tariq also received a trophy for his brilliant hat-trick achievement against Oakworth. In the u12’s Josh Holt collected the batting award while Samee Tariq won the bowling and Liam Chipman The Fielding. The under 11 awards for batting bowling and fielding were all won by Liam Chipman. There was also 4 other awards, The Peggy Jones Memorial Award for the most improved young player went to Carlton Beanland whilst The George Stubley Batting Trophy for the best young batsman at the club went to Tinashe Gomwe. The Malcolm Doverner Bowling award was won by Phoebe Robb, Phoebe was the first girl ever to feature in the UAJCL bowling averages. The prize giving ended with Graham Aldred receiving the clubman of the year award for all his hard work at the club.
